With the introduction of iPhone and the proliferation of touch-screen handheld devices the whole landscape of how computing is going to be conducted is going to change.

We may actually shift to the old mainframe style computing model with the handheld devices being the dumb (or as dumb as can be) terminals and the cloud being the mainframe.

Anyhow here are some other emerging technologies that may impact our computing life.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the emerging technologies of present day. AI research is highly technical and specialized, and deeply divided into subfields and aims to self-acting and aware computers (yes Skynet). As science reveal the mysteries of the brain and how data is stored in electro-chemical environment the prospects of AI are getting better and better – so expect the terminator to be available in your neighborhood department store sometime soon.

Semantic Web is also one of the modern-day emerging technologies. The Semantic Web is a web of data that enables machines to understand the meaning of information on the World Wide Web. The main purpose of the Semantic Web is driving the evolution of the current Web by allowing users to use it to its full potential, thus allowing them to find, share, and combine information more easily. The semantic web is a vision of information that can be interpreted by machines, so machines can perform more of the tedious work involved in finding, combining, and acting upon information on the web.

Immersion means virtual reality. Immersion is the state of consciousness where an immersant’s awareness of physical self is diminished or lost by being surrounded in an engrossing total environment; often artificial. This mental state is frequently accompanied with spatial excess, intense focus, a distorted sense of time, and effortless action. While the gaming industry has been experimenting with virtual reality for quite sometime now, and all the dramatic innovations in the gaming industry is the direct outcome of this experimentation, we are still quite far away from reaching a Matrix style bliss.

Combine all three together, and with a bit of hyper-active imagination you can see that the scary proposition.
